I found this artist\'s work while randomly flipping open a book at a book store and was in awe from the start. I forgot the name, however, and spent about two days perfecting my stalking abilities in order to find his work on the internet. hooray technology.

The first thing I think of when looking at the artwork above is Manets' Olympia. The way the girl is positioned, her expression, the christ figure in the background holding the dog, the animals on the bed... all can be compared to the elements displayed in Manets' famous renaissance artwork.

I love the detail in Mark Ryden's artwork, the fact that the viewer is drawn into this mysterious world loaded in signifiers where sexual and religious connotations conflict with the innocent colours and toys.

Very very cool.
